WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana – Purdue University announced a historic $42 million commitment from alumnus and longtime benefactor Roland G. Parrish. In recognition of the gift, the university will name its upcoming Mitch Daniels School of Business building the Roland G. Parrish Hall of Business. The 164,000‑square‑foot facility is slated to open in the fall of 2027 and will become the second‑largest classroom building on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus.
Parrish’s ties to Purdue and his entrepreneurial success
Parrish earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in industrial management and management from Purdue in 1975 and 1976. While a student he competed in track and field, earning four varsity letters, two most‑valuable‑player awards, and serving as team captain his senior year. After graduation he spent 13 years with Exxon before entering the restaurant industry.
In 1989 he opened his first McDonald’s restaurant in Dallas and eventually built one of the nation’s largest minority‑owned McDonald’s franchise networks. Parrish attributes much of his professional foundation to his Purdue education and says supporting the university holds personal meaning for him.
Features of the new Hall of Business
The new building will serve as the centerpiece of the growing business school. Plans include flexible classrooms, conference space, and state‑of‑the‑art teaching and research laboratories for financial trading, data visualization, behavioral research, and experiential learning. When completed, the structure will rank behind only the Wilmeth Active Learning Center in size among Purdue’s classroom facilities.
Parrish’s ongoing involvement with Purdue
Beyond his financial contribution, Parrish has maintained a longstanding relationship with the university. He has served on advisory councils for Purdue’s libraries, the business school, and the Black Cultural Center. His earlier philanthropy includes the Roland G. Parrish Library of Management & Economics, scholarships, and funding for the Business Opportunity Program’s summer session.
University leadership’s response
Purdue interim President Mitch Daniels praised Parrish’s entrepreneurial achievements and his dedication to expanding opportunities for students. Daniels noted that the gift not only supports the university’s academic mission but also demonstrates the impact of alumni who give back to their alma mater.
Impact on the local community
The new Hall of Business is expected to attract additional students, faculty, and research partners to West Lafayette, further strengthening the city’s reputation as a hub for higher education and innovation. Local businesses anticipate increased activity as the building draws visitors for conferences, workshops, and collaborative projects.
Construction is set to begin later this year, with the university planning regular updates for the community as the project progresses.
