Pueblo teacher Arjun Sahdev named finalist for Colorado Teacher of the Year

Minnequa Elementary in Pueblo is celebrating a remarkable achievement by one of its own. Fifth‑grade teacher Arjun Sahdev, now in his sixth year at the school, has been named a finalist for the Colorado Teacher of the Year award. Out of 297 applicants from 76 districts across the state, only eight educators earned a spot on the finalist list, and Sahdev is the sole representative from Pueblo District 60.

Background and qualifications

Sahdev entered Pueblo District 60 through Teach For America, bringing fresh energy and a commitment to serving the community. Last school year he was honored as District 60’s Elementary Teacher of the Year, a distinction that highlighted his ability to connect with students and families. His classroom is known for enthusiasm, creativity, and a focus on meeting the needs of each child.

Recognition from state leadership

Education Commissioner Susan Cordova visited Minnequa Elementary to deliver the news in person. During the surprise classroom visit, Cordova praised Sahdev for shaping his teaching to reflect the community’s values and for his “commitment to every aspect of the students and their lives.” The commissioner’s remarks underscored the importance of educators who build genuine relationships and foster a supportive learning environment.

Support from school leadership

Principal Katie Harshman echoed the commissioner’s sentiments, noting that Sahdev “represents so much of what makes Minnequa special.” She highlighted his leadership through action and his ability to forge authentic connections with students, parents, and staff.

What the finalist status means

As a finalist, Sahdev will receive a $1,000 award from the state’s Teacher of the Year program. The final winner will be announced later this fall, and the honor brings statewide recognition to both the teacher and the Pueblo school community.

Why this matters to Pueblo families

For parents and community members, Sahdev’s nomination signals that Pueblo schools are producing educators who prioritize faith, family values, and individual liberty in the classroom. His approach aligns with the community’s desire for teachers who nurture not only academic growth but also character development.

Looking ahead

While the competition remains strong, Sahdev’s inclusion among the eight finalists reflects the dedication of Pueblo educators to excellence. The school and district will continue to support his efforts, and families are encouraged to celebrate this achievement as a testament to the quality of local education.
