Pueblo native Zean Whatley shines at Cal Ripken World Series in Missouri

Eleven‑year‑old Zean Whatley, born at Pueblo’s Parkview Hospital, traveled from a U.S. Army base in Bavaria, Germany, to Branson, Missouri, to compete in the Cal Ripken World Series. He was one of just 12 boys selected to represent the combined regions of Europe and Africa in the elite youth baseball tournament held Aug. 5‑16.

Military family roots and overseas life

Whatley’s father, Sergeant Frank Whatley, has been stationed in Germany for the past two years, and the family has called the Bavarian town home during that time. Zean’s mother, Andrea Pacheco, grew up in Pueblo, where she met Frank at Central High School. The family’s move overseas is typical of military children, who must adapt to new cultures and environments every few years.

“It’s been a lot of fun. We’ve got to see a lot of different cultures and countries. It’s been a blast out here,” Zean said in a video call from Germany.

Path to the World Series

To earn a spot in the Cal Ripken World Series, Whatley first submitted a highlight reel and then competed in a qualifying tournament in the Netherlands. His performance secured him a place among the twelve elite players selected from across two continents.

While living in Germany, Zean has played on two local teams, allowing him to sharpen his baseball skills, learn German, and make new friends. Those experiences, he says, have helped him adjust quickly to the competitive atmosphere of the World Series.

Family support and hometown pride

Andrea Pacheco expressed pride in her son’s achievement and noted the unique nature of their family’s journey. “Everyone is there – we are the only ones who left,” she said, referring to the Pueblo community that remains behind.

Now back in the United States, Zean looks forward to reuniting with family and friends in Pueblo. “I’m feeling excited to go back to the States and being able to see family, and letting them come and support me,” he said, smiling.

What the tournament means for military children

Whatley’s story underscores the resilience required of children in military families. Frequent relocations demand flexibility, cultural awareness, and the ability to thrive in new environments—qualities that Zean demonstrated on the baseball field.

The Cal Ripken World Series, held annually in Branson, brings together top youth talent from around the globe. For Zean, the experience not only showcased his athletic ability but also highlighted the broader strengths of military families who support their children’s pursuits despite constant change.

Local readers in Pueblo can follow Zean’s progress and celebrate his representation of the community on an international stage.
