Psychologist Testifies Lindsay Clancy Not Criminally Responsible for Killing Three Children

Plymouth, Massachusetts – During the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, a former labor‑and‑delivery nurse accused of killing her three children in January 2023, defense psychologist Dr. Paul Zeizel testified that Clancy’s mental illness removed her ability to understand the criminal nature of her actions.

Expert testimony on mental illness

Dr. Zeizel, who treated Clancy at a hospital after the killings, explained that she suffers from bipolar disorder and a rare condition known as postpartum psychosis. He said the illness, linked to the stress, sleep deprivation and hormonal changes following childbirth, can cause severe paranoia, delusional thinking and a loss of appreciation for the wrongfulness of one’s conduct.

“She was unable to conform her behavior to the rule of law. She had no appreciation for the wrongfulness of her act,” Zeizel told the jury, adding that Clancy has a “mental disease or a defect.” He emphasized that her condition does not automatically excuse everyday tasks; Clancy was still able to drive, search the internet and take her daughter to a doctor on the day of the murders.

Prosecutors challenge the defense

Prosecutors highlighted inconsistencies in Zeizel’s report and questioned his objectivity, noting that he had served as a witness for the defense and appeared with Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, at a news conference. They also pointed out that Clancy’s medical records contain no evidence of auditory hallucinations commanding her to kill herself, only statements that she “wanted to die.”

State Attorney Shanan Buckingham read excerpts from daily reports at Tewksbury Hospital, the state psychiatric facility where Clancy is confined, showing that she receives visits from her parents and interacts with other patients, but there is no record of her commemorating her children’s birthdays or otherwise memorializing them.

Legal stakes

If convicted of murder, Clancy faces life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. A finding of not criminally responsible because of mental illness would result in her continued commitment to a state mental‑health facility.

Clancy, 36, has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges. The three children—Callan, Dawson and Cora—were between eight months and five years old at the time of their deaths. After strangling them, Clancy attempted suicide by jumping from a second‑story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.

Broader context

The case underscores the complex intersection of mental‑health diagnoses, parental rights and criminal law. Postpartum psychosis, affecting roughly one to two women per 1,000 births, is considered more severe and less common than postpartum depression. Experts note that while the condition can impair judgment, each case requires careful legal and medical evaluation to determine criminal responsibility.

Both the defense and the prosecution will continue to present evidence on whether Clancy’s mental state at the time of the killings meets the legal threshold for a lack of criminal responsibility.
