In Newark, New Jersey, tensions flared outside the Delaney Hall detention center as protesters clashed with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The protest was sparked by allegations of poor conditions for illegal immigrants held at the facility. Demonstrators attempted to form a human chain, chanting slogans like ‘No more ICE!’ and ‘Free them all!’
Governor Denied Entry
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill attempted to gain access to Delaney Hall but was denied entry. ‘My request for access to Delaney Hall was formally denied this morning, raising serious questions about what they are trying to hide from public view,’ Sherrill stated. The governor has been a vocal opponent of private detention facilities and advocates for the closure of Delaney Hall.
Inside the facility, nearly 300 detainees have initiated a hunger and labor strike, citing inhumane conditions, poor food, and lack of medical care. In a letter, the detainees acknowledged their illegal entry into the United States but expressed feeling ‘kidnapped’ due to their detention conditions.
ICE and DHS Response
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) countered these claims, stating that detainees receive three meals a day, clean water, and access to communication with family and legal representatives. According to the spokesperson, ICE detention standards exceed those of most U.S. prisons.
Family members and advocates have maintained a vigil outside the facility, demanding better conditions and transparency. The situation has drawn attention from several elected officials, including Sen. Andy Kim and Reps. Rob Menendez Jr. and Frank Pallone Jr., who have called for the facility’s closure.
In February 2025, former DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin highlighted the presence of dangerous individuals within the facility, including ‘murderers, terrorists, child rapists, and MS-13 gang members.’
