Prospector Popcorn recall issued in Connecticut and New York over undeclared soy

Ridgefield, Connecticut‑based Prospector Popcorn announced a voluntary recall of its Belgian Chocolate Toffee popcorn after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration discovered the product contains soy lecithin that was not disclosed on the ingredient label. The recall, classified as a Class II safety alert, affects 140 individual 3.5‑ounce bags distributed in Connecticut and New York.

Recall details

The affected bags carry UPC 850073852125 and have expiration dates ranging from August 5, 2026, through October 24, 2026. Consumers who purchased the popcorn should either discard the product or return it to the retailer for a full refund. No illnesses have been reported in connection with this batch.

Why soy matters

Soy is one of the major food allergens that must be clearly identified on packaging under federal law. While the label for the recalled popcorn lists milk, tree nuts (specifically almonds) and wheat, the presence of soy lecithin was omitted, creating a risk for individuals with soy allergies.

FDA classification

The FDA’s Class II designation means that exposure to the recalled product could cause temporary or medically reversible health effects, though the likelihood of serious consequences is considered remote. This classification underscores the importance of accurate labeling for protecting consumers with food sensitivities.

Previous recall

Prospector Popcorn also issued a separate recall earlier this summer, covering several gourmet popcorn varieties—including Belgian Chocolate Toffee, Chocolate Mocha, Fudge Brownie, and Maple Walnut Ice Cream—due to inaccurate nutritional information on their labels. That recall applied to products with expiration dates on or before July 10, 2027.

What consumers should do

Consumers can verify whether they have an affected product by checking the FDA’s recall database or the UPC number on the package. If you have the recalled popcorn, stop using it immediately and follow the retailer’s return policy. For any concerns about allergic reactions, contact a healthcare professional.

Company response

Prospector Popcorn stated that the recall was initiated voluntarily on April 28, 2026, once the labeling discrepancy was identified. The company emphasized its commitment to product safety and accurate labeling, and it is working closely with the FDA to resolve the issue.

Community impact

This recall serves as a reminder to local producers and consumers alike that rigorous label compliance is essential for protecting families, especially those with children who may have food allergies. The incident also highlights the role of the FDA in safeguarding public health across state lines.
