Proposal for Trump $250 Bill Faces Congressional Hurdle

The U.S. Treasury Department is preparing a $250 note featuring former President Donald Trump’s portrait to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary. However, this initiative hinges on Congress amending a federal law that currently prohibits living individuals from appearing on U.S. currency.

Legislative Hurdle

Republican Representative Joe Wilson of South Carolina introduced the bill in February 2025, aiming to coincide with America’s birthday in July and as a critique of the Biden administration’s economic policies. The bill is currently with the House Financial Services Committee.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized adherence to existing laws, stating, “I have two mandates for U.S. currency at present. That no living person can be on U.S. currency. And the currency must say, ‘In God we trust.’”

Political Reactions

The proposal has sparked significant opposition from Democratic lawmakers. They argue that the initiative focuses more on Trump’s legacy than on celebrating the nation’s milestone anniversary. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have publicly criticized the proposal, with Jeffries stating, “The upcoming July 4 anniversary is not about a wannabe King. It’s about celebrating the American journey.”

Democratic Virginia Senator Mark Warner also voiced concerns, suggesting that the focus should be on lowering costs for families rather than introducing a new $250 bill.

Commemorative Currency

Should the legislation pass, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is prepared to produce the commemorative note. The Federal Reserve currently issues only seven denominations, and this new bill would be a unique addition to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary.

In addition to the proposed $250 bill, the Treasury has announced that Trump’s signature will appear on future U.S. paper currency alongside Treasury Secretary Bessent’s signature as part of the anniversary celebrations.
