Vanderbilt Heiress Belle Burden Faces Scrutiny Over Memoir Claims

Belle Burden, a Vanderbilt heiress, is facing allegations of exaggerating her financial struggles in her memoir, “Strangers: A Memoir of Marriage.” The New Yorker accessed divorce documents that reportedly contradict Burden’s claims of near financial ruin following her divorce from hedge fund executive Henry Davis.

Financial Discrepancies

In her book, Burden described how a prenuptial agreement left her at a disadvantage, as she had given up her career to raise their children. However, documents reveal that Burden had substantial financial assets, including a $63 million trust fund, an $8 million share in a charitable trust, and a $4 million interest in her family’s limited partnership.

Despite these assets, Burden claimed she was nearly left with nothing after the divorce. The prenup reportedly stipulated that anything in both names would be split equally, while separate assets remained separate. Burden’s memoir suggests she used her trusts to purchase family homes, which Davis was entitled to half of due to the prenup.

Asset Management and Divorce Settlement

The New Yorker reported that Burden’s income in 2019 was over $800,000, which she described as atypical. Divorce documents also showed she retained significant assets, including five trusts and a 6% stake in her family’s partnership, valued at over $10 million.

Burden’s memoir reflects her fear of losing family homes, yet legal experts suggest she may not have faced such a risk. The divorce settlement reportedly allowed her to keep both homes, as Davis relinquished his claims on them.

Burden acknowledges her privileged position compared to others in similar situations, yet the narrative of her financial hardship has been questioned. The New Yorker noted discrepancies in her account of the divorce proceedings, suggesting a trial was never scheduled, contrary to her claims.

As the debate over the accuracy of Burden’s memoir continues, it highlights the complexities of personal narratives and the importance of transparency in recounting personal experiences.
