Probation Check Leads to Seizure of Semi‑Automatic Rifles and Thousands of Rounds in Santa Maria Home

Santa Maria, Calif. – During a routine probation compliance check on Thursday afternoon, Santa Maria Police Department (SMPD) officers discovered a cache of firearms and ammunition inside a residence on the city’s north side.

Search uncovers large‑capacity magazines and thousands of live rounds

At approximately 4:00 p.m. on Oct. 8, officers arrived at the home to verify that the occupant, an adult male on felony probation, was adhering to the terms of his release. While conducting the check, they found several thousand rounds of live ammunition of various calibers.

A search warrant executed at the property uncovered multiple large‑capacity magazines and a total of 11 firearms. The weapons included rifles, semi‑automatic pistols, revolvers and shotguns. SMPD determined that several of the rifles possessed features consistent with semi‑automatic rifles, often referred to in the media as assault weapons.

Probation violation results in arrest and booking

The firearms and ammunition belonged to the resident, who is prohibited from possessing any weapons while on felony probation. He was taken into custody and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on multiple felony weapons violations.

“We take violations of probation conditions very seriously, especially when they involve illegal possession of firearms,” said SMPD spokesperson Officer Maria Hernandez. “Our officers acted swiftly to secure the weapons and protect the community.”

Community safety and legal implications

The seizure underscores the importance of strict enforcement of probation terms that ban firearm possession. California law mandates that individuals on felony probation may not own, purchase, or possess any firearm or ammunition. Violations can result in additional felony charges, extended probation periods, or imprisonment.

Local residents expressed relief that the police acted quickly to remove the weapons from the neighborhood. “Knowing the police are vigilant gives us peace of mind,” said longtime Santa Maria resident Carlos Mendoza.

The case will proceed through the Santa Barbara County criminal courts, where the defendant faces charges that could carry significant prison time if convicted.

What this means for Santa Maria

While this incident involved a single residence, it serves as a reminder that law‑enforcement agencies remain vigilant in enforcing probation conditions that protect public safety. SMPD encourages anyone with information about illegal firearms to contact the department’s tip line.
