Prince George’s County schools host staff fest at stadium ahead of new year

On Monday, Prince George’s County Public Schools turned the home field of the Chesapeake Baysox into a lively back‑to‑school pep rally. The district’s inaugural Staff Fest, held at Prince George’s Stadium, brought together roughly 22,000 employees—including teachers, administrators, support staff and volunteers—to build excitement for the upcoming school year.

Purpose and leadership

New superintendent Shawn Joseph framed the gathering as a chance to reinforce the district’s culture and remind staff that students and families remain at the heart of every decision. “We’re here for children and we’re here for families,” Joseph said. “All 22,000 of us have an opportunity to transform children’s lives every single day.”

Activities and morale boost

The event featured food stations, games and giveaways, but many attendees said the best part was reconnecting with the students they serve. Community school coordinator Rochel Jeffrey admitted, “I miss my kids.” Food and nutrition services assistant Ladon Campbell added, “They’re hungry, they’re ready to learn, and I love it.”

Paraprofessional educator Angela Davis Sutton described the fest as a morale booster, noting she felt a mix of nerves and excitement for the first day of school. “I’m looking forward to meeting all the little brains and giving them everything I have to ensure they’re successful for college and life,” she said.

Teacher Monica Mayo‑James echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that bringing staff together creates momentum, “It boosts teacher morale, and it encourages networking, friendships.” Long‑time Largo High School substitute teacher Carolyn Marshall, 81, also expressed enthusiasm, adding a gentle warning for students: “They know I’m a no‑nonsense teacher. They’re going to learn even if I’m a substitute.”

Community impact

Beyond the festivities, the Staff Fest underscored the district’s commitment to families. By gathering employees in a single, celebratory space, the district aims to foster stronger relationships among staff, which can translate into more cohesive support for students once classrooms reopen on Aug. 25.

Parents and community members watching the event noted the visible dedication of the district’s workforce. The rally served as a public reminder that education is a collaborative effort, rooted in the shared mission of nurturing children and strengthening families throughout Prince George’s County.
