According to pediatric dentist Dr. Ronald Hsu, tooth discoloration occurs when pigments from foods and beverages attach to enamel, the hard outer surface of the tooth. Many staining foods and drinks are also acidic, which can temporarily soften enamel and make it easier for pigments to stick to the tooth surface.
Causes of Tooth Stains
Coffee, tea, and red wine are common causes of tooth stains due to their dark pigments and tannins. As people age, enamel becomes thinner, revealing more of the yellow-colored dentin beneath the surface, which can also contribute to tooth discoloration.
To prevent tooth stains, Dr. Hsu recommends drinking water after consuming coffee, tea, or red wine, using a straw, avoiding all-day sipping, maintaining good oral hygiene, waiting 30 minutes before brushing, and scheduling professional cleanings.
