President Trump’s “America” renaming spree prompts South Park’s satirical rebrand

In a tongue‑in‑cheek move that underscores the cultural clash over President Trump’s recent geographic‑renaming initiative, the creators of South Park revealed that the show will be billed as “South America” for its upcoming season. Trey Parker and Matt Stone made the announcement on Tuesday, saying the change was inspired by the “bravery and patriotism” of major tech firms that quickly adopt official government name changes.

Trump’s “America” naming agenda

Since taking office in January 2025, President Trump has used executive authority to rename several high‑profile landmarks. An executive order signed on his first day back renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America,” a change that was entered into the Geographic Names Information System and subsequently reflected on U.S. versions of Google Maps and Apple Maps. In a later order, the president directed that Lake Ontario be listed as “Lake America” for U.S. users, while Canadian maps retain the historic name.

Most recently, President Trump posted a series of images on social media suggesting that New Mexico be renamed “New America.” The posts were quickly denounced by New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, who called the effort a distraction from the war in Iran and rising consumer prices.

South Park’s satirical response

Known for its sharp political satire, South Park has long lampooned the president and his administration. The show’s latest gag targets the renaming spree, with Parker and Stone saying, “We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount – a Skydance Capitulation.” The rebrand will debut on September 16 on Comedy Central and the following day on Paramount+ in the United States, Canada and Australia.

In a recent post on the official “South Park” X account, the show shared an image of President Trump with his pants around his ankles, clutching an Emmy award. The caption congratulated the creators on their recent Emmy win for Outstanding Animated Program, a reminder that the series has earned five Primetime Emmys and 21 nominations from the Television Academy.

Why the name change matters to conservatives

Supporters of President Trump argue that renaming iconic landmarks with the word “America” reinforces national pride and counters what they see as a cultural drift away from traditional values. By placing “America” on maps, the administration seeks to remind citizens of the country’s heritage and to assert a clear, unapologetic identity on the global stage.

Critics, however, contend that such changes are largely symbolic and distract from pressing issues like the conflict in Iran, inflation and supply‑chain disruptions. Governor Lujan Grisham’s swift condemnation reflects a broader bipartisan concern that the president’s focus on nomenclature may overlook substantive policy challenges.

Industry reaction

Tech giants Google and Apple have confirmed that they update place names in response to official government changes. At the time of the Gulf of America and Lake America updates, both companies announced that U.S. users would see the new labels, while Canadian users would continue to see the historic names.

Paramount, the parent company of Comedy Central, is currently in the process of merging its film studio and television operations with Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent of CNN, HBO and other major media assets. The timing of the rebrand coincides with these corporate shifts, adding another layer of industry intrigue.

What’s next?

President Trump’s renaming agenda shows no sign of slowing, and the administration is expected to continue issuing executive orders that align geographic names with a patriotic vision of the United States. Meanwhile, fans of South Park can look forward to a season that will likely continue to poke fun at the president’s bold, if controversial, cultural initiatives.
