President Trump nominates Lee Greenwood’s wife as ambassador to Barbados and Eastern Caribbean

President Donald Trump on Monday submitted the name of Kimberly Greenwood to the U.S. Senate for confirmation as the United States ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean. Greenwood is the wife of Lee Greenwood, the singer whose patriotic anthem “God Bless the USA” has long been a staple at Trump’s political events.

Nomination details

In a brief statement, Greenwood thanked the president on Instagram, writing, “Mr. President, thank you for believing in me and entrusting me with this extraordinary opportunity to serve.” Lee Greenwood echoed the sentiment in his own post, noting that his wife has worked with the Trump administration for 18 years, including directing state pageants while the president owned the Miss Universe Organization.

The nomination would have Greenwood serve concurrently as ambassador to Barbados and, without additional compensation, to the Caribbean nations of St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Context of political appointments

Political appointees, especially donors and long‑time supporters, have historically been tapped for ambassadorships. The Trump administration continues that tradition, pairing supporters with diplomatic posts that often carry significant symbolic weight. In contrast, Democratic President Joe Biden recently selected Seattle business leader Roger Nyhus, a prominent donor, for the same ambassadorial region.

While many political appointees have limited impact on day‑to‑day foreign policy, they can help advance U.S. interests abroad and strengthen ties with host nations. Critics sometimes argue that such appointments risk prioritizing loyalty over expertise, but the administration emphasizes the value of trusted individuals who share America’s values and commitment to strong bilateral relationships.

Other nominations announced

Alongside Greenwood’s nomination, President Trump also put forward Rep. Wesley Hunt, R‑Texas, as the top envoy to Riyadh. Hunt, a former Army officer who served as a diplomatic liaison in Saudi Arabia, finished third in the March 2026 Texas Republican primary for the U.S. Senate. In a post on X, Hunt highlighted the “strategic importance of the partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia and the profound responsibility of this position.”

The White House also announced nominees for vacant ambassadorial posts in Haiti, Somalia, Djibouti and Suriname, underscoring the administration’s ongoing effort to fill key diplomatic posts with trusted allies.

Historical perspective

During his first term, President Trump appointed notable donors such as hotelier Gordon Sondland, who served as ambassador to the European Union, and former Congressman Jeffrey Ross Gunter, who was named ambassador to Iceland. Those appointments generated mixed reactions, ranging from praise for their business acumen to criticism over perceived conflicts of interest.

Nevertheless, the current nominations reflect the administration’s continued reliance on supporters who have demonstrated loyalty over many years. By placing trusted individuals in ambassadorial roles, the Trump administration aims to ensure that U.S. diplomatic missions abroad are led by people who understand and champion American values.

What’s next?

Kimberly Greenwood’s nomination now awaits Senate confirmation. If confirmed, she will join a growing roster of political appointees representing the United States in the Caribbean, a region of strategic importance for trade, tourism, and regional security. The Senate’s advice and consent process will determine whether the nomination proceeds, and the administration has signaled confidence that the nominee will be confirmed promptly.
