President Trump launches AI Force, vows to protect American innovation

President Donald Trump used a Truth Social post on Saturday to unveil the creation of an “AI Force” and to name an AI czar who will lead a national effort to keep the United States at the forefront of artificial intelligence. The administration emphasized that it will not hinder the rapid growth of this transformative industry, but will instead focus on protecting American children, workers and national security as the country competes with China.

Trump administration’s AI policy framework

In March, the Trump administration released a legislative framework that addresses child safety, free speech, workforce issues and energy costs while calling for a consistent national approach to AI policy. A June national security directive also ordered agencies to accelerate adoption of advanced AI, requiring systems used in security settings to be “robust, steerable, controllable” and subject to clear lines of accountability.

Contrast with criticism from former President Obama

Former President Barack Obama, speaking at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, criticized the current administration’s approach, calling for stronger federal regulation and describing the White House as “not capable of or willing to” develop a serious regulatory framework. Obama’s remarks echoed concerns about safety, jobs and human control as AI technology advances.

Republican response

RNC member and Humans First Chairwoman Amy Kremer argued that the responsibility for AI guardrails belongs in Congress, not the executive branch, and urged Republicans to lead the development of a framework that protects Americans while preserving innovation. Kremer warned that excessive regulation could give China an advantage in the AI race.

Industry voices call for caution

Executives from the AI sector have also weighed in. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged companies to slow the pace of frontier‑model improvements, while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk expressed support for greater caution. The administration’s stance seeks to balance these industry concerns with its goal of fostering rapid, American‑led AI development.

What this means for Americans

By establishing an AI Force and appointing a dedicated czar, the Trump administration aims to ensure that AI advances safely and responsibly without stifling the entrepreneurial spirit that drives American innovation. The approach promises to protect families and workers while keeping the United States competitive on the global stage.
