ROSHARON, Texas – A local family is pleading for greater caution after a tragic murder that unfolded on a popular online marketplace. Victor Gonzalez, a 45‑year‑old father of two, was shot and killed while attempting to sell property through Facebook Marketplace.
What happened
According to investigators, Victor met 17‑year‑old Anthony Castro in the Aldine area on Sunday to complete a property transaction. During the meeting, Castro allegedly pointed a gun at Victor, demanded money and fled. Victor pursued the vehicle, called 9‑1‑1 and gave dispatchers directions to the suspect’s car. While on the call, he reported that he had been shot and the conversation abruptly ended.
Police later spoke with a witness who had given Castro a ride after the robbery. The witness said Castro exited the car, opened fire at Victor’s vehicle and shouted, “just hit a lick.” Surveillance footage captured three gunshots during the confrontation.
Legal response
Rosharon police have charged Anthony Castro with capital murder. The case is now in the hands of the Brazoria County District Attorney’s Office, which will seek the maximum penalty under Texas law.
Family’s message
Mayra Gonzalez, Victor’s wife, described her husband as “a great man” who was loved by friends and family throughout the community. “Losing the father of my kids has been the worst thing that ever happened in my life,” she said. “They loved him so, so much.”
She urges anyone using online marketplaces to treat strangers with suspicion and to prioritize safety. “Take what happened to me and my family as a learning lesson for everyone,” Mayra said. “Don’t trust people you meet online. Be careful.”
Community impact
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through Rosharon, a tight‑knit community where many residents know one another. Local leaders have called for increased public awareness about the risks of meeting strangers for transactions and have reminded citizens to meet in public places, bring a friend, and inform law enforcement of any suspicious activity.
While the investigation continues, the Gonzalez family hopes their painful experience will prevent similar incidents and protect other families in the area.
