A driver is accused of leading police on a pursuit down Interstate 93 in Boston, smashing into other vehicles while holding a pregnant woman hostage in the car, Massachusetts State Police said Wednesday.

State Police said troopers were first called in around 7:20 a.m. for what they described as a “suspected hostage-by-firearm situation.” Troopers found the vehicle near exit 9 northbound and gave chase. The driver crashed into eight other vehicles on the highway before stopping and trying to run off on foot, police said. The suspect was taken into custody, and the victim was offered medical care. A gun was found in the vehicle, police said.
