Portage Park Arch Restoration Begins, City Aims to Finish by Year‑End

Portage Park – The Chicago Park District announced today that restoration work is under way on the historic stone archway that marks the park’s main entrance. The arch, a product of the 1930s Works Progress Administration, suffered limited masonry damage when a driver struck it while turning left onto Central Avenue in February.

Repair Plan and Materials

Park District spokesperson Irene Tostado explained that the agency collected mortar samples earlier this month to ensure the new work matches the original pointing mortar. The district will use salvaged stone, limestone, and scientifically analyzed mortar to replicate the arch’s historic appearance. Traditional masonry techniques will be employed, and the project will comply with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation and the Guidelines for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings.

Construction Timeline

Construction fencing has been installed around the arch, and a repair mock‑up is currently being drawn up. Tostado said the district expects the repairs to be finished before the end of the year, allowing park visitors to enjoy the restored gateway without prolonged disruption.

Historical Context

The stone arch was added to the 38‑acre Portage Park after the property became part of the Chicago Park District in the 1930s. It reflects the traditional stone walls commonly found throughout the United Kingdom, a design choice noted by former Park District spokesperson Michele Lemons. In addition to the arch, the Works Progress Administration built restrooms and a concrete pool at the park, the latter replaced by an Olympic‑size pool in 1959 ahead of the Pan American Games.

Community Impact

Portage Park serves a diverse neighborhood in Chicago’s Northwest Side, providing recreational space for families, seniors, and youth. Restoring the arch not only preserves a piece of New Deal heritage but also reinforces the district’s commitment to maintaining historic assets for future generations. Residents can expect the restored arch to enhance the park’s aesthetic appeal and serve as a reminder of the community’s enduring ties to American labor history.

What to Expect

While construction is ongoing, park users are asked to follow posted signage and use alternate pathways as needed. The Park District will keep the public informed of any schedule changes or additional safety measures through its website and social media channels.

For more information about the restoration project or to provide feedback, residents can contact the Chicago Park District at [email protected] or visit the district’s office at 300 S. Michigan Avenue.
