The Port Authority of Kansas City is currently considering several development projects, including a proposed ‘AI factory and research facility.’ During a recent meeting, Port KC CEO Jon Stephens described the project as distinct from a traditional data center, though further details are pending.
Local Development Initiatives
Among the projects under review is a request by Custom Truck One Source Inc. for up to $50 million in bonds. This funding would support the purchase and renovation of a 174,000-square-foot building on Clary Blvd., intended as a new manufacturing site. The expansion could generate up to 300 jobs with an average salary of $81,000 annually. The company is also seeking tax exemptions, with the decision held for further input from Kansas City Public Schools.
Additionally, the committee recommended approval of incentives for a new apartment complex in the Northland. Sunflower Development Group plans to build a 161-unit complex near Interstate 435 and Missouri Highway 152, with a $500,000 contribution to the city’s housing trust fund.
Riverfront and Infrastructure Improvements
Port KC is also focused on enhancing the riverfront area. Plans include reclaiming land under the Town of Kansas Bridge and constructing a ‘flyover’ bridge to improve safety and connectivity near Lydia Avenue. A grant application for up to $90 million from the Federal Railroad Administration is being prepared to support this infrastructure project.
Other riverfront activities include the completion of a streetcar pavilion, sidewalk replacements, and the upcoming Missouri River Mural Festival. Port KC is also taking measures to prevent unauthorized camping during the World Cup, emphasizing the area’s development as a community space.
