Jill Smokler, the founder of the popular parenting blog Scary Mommy, has died at the age of 48 after a two-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
Smokler’s Legacy
Smokler launched Scary Mommy in 2008 as a place to share the joys and pitfalls of parenting. The blog expanded into a major parenting brand, and Smokler became known for her honest and often self-deprecating take on motherhood.
She was a bestselling author, a frequent guest on national television programs, and the winner of three Webby Awards. Smokler was also a proud mother of three children, Lily, Ben, and Evan, and her family said in a statement that she was most proud of the mark she left on the world.
Smokler’s first sign of the disease was in April 2024, when she experienced a sudden seizure. She then underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor and subsequent treatments, including radiation and chemotherapy.
A Devastating Diagnosis
Glioblastoma is the most common malignant primary brain tumor in adults and one of the deadliest forms of brain cancer. According to the American Brain Tumor Association, about 13.9% of all brain tumors are glioblastomas, and more than 12,000 new cases are diagnosed in the U.S. each year.
The median survival rate for glioblastoma is approximately 12 to 18 months after diagnosis, even with treatment. Only about 5% to 7% of patients survive five years after diagnosis.
