Keegan Mayes, a young soccer athlete from North Texas, has scored his biggest win yet – beating cancer. Diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma last fall, Mayes underwent chemotherapy and spent countless hours in the hospital. Despite the challenges, his love for soccer never wavered.
Overcoming Adversity
Mayes’ mother, Wendy, recalled the devastating diagnosis on her son’s 15th birthday. However, doctors quickly developed a treatment plan, and Mayes began chemotherapy within a week. Children’s Health Pediatric Oncologist Dr. Katie Ludwig noted that Hodgkin’s lymphoma is one of the more survivable cancers, with a cure rate of over 90%.
Throughout his treatment, Mayes stayed focused on his goals, both on and off the soccer pitch. He even turned the moment of losing his hair into a positive experience, hosting a party with friends where they buzzed his hair together. Mayes credited his soccer team with helping him stay connected and positive during treatment.
Now in remission, Mayes is celebrating his victory and looking forward to attending a World Cup game in Seattle. His story serves as an inspiration to others, demonstrating the power of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
