Pope Leo Calls for Caution on AI Development in Landmark Encyclical

Pope Leo has issued a significant call to action for world leaders, urging a slowdown in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. In his first major document, the encyclical titled “Magnifica Humanitas,” Pope Leo expressed concerns about AI’s potential to spread misinformation and prioritize conflict, potentially leading to unending wars. This document, spanning nearly 43,000 words, reflects the Pope’s growing concern over the rapid pace of technological advancement.

AI and Ethical Considerations

Pope Leo, the first U.S. pope, emphasized the need for robust legal frameworks and independent oversight to manage AI’s development. He called for political systems that do not abdicate their responsibilities and for AI data ownership not to be left solely in private hands. The Pope highlighted the importance of protecting workers’ rights and ensuring children’s safety in the face of advancing technology.

In his encyclical, Pope Leo drew parallels to the biblical story of the Tower of Babel, warning against enterprises that aspire to reach heaven without God’s blessing. He urged society to address the crucial questions surrounding AI development and to work towards building the common good.

Repudiation of ‘Just War’ Theory

In a notable departure from traditional Church teachings, Pope Leo repudiated the ‘just war’ theory, which has been used to justify wars for centuries. He criticized the notion that wars can be justified to defend against aggression, highlighting the disastrous consequences of violence and armed conflict on civilian populations.

The Pope also expressed concern that some leaders might use armed conflict as a means to distract from domestic issues. He called for AI’s use in warfare to be subject to rigorous ethical constraints, deeming it impermissible to entrust AI systems with lethal decisions.

Addressing Social Justice and Apologies

Pope Leo addressed social justice issues, decrying the “new forms of slavery” faced by workers in the AI and technology sectors. He highlighted the dangerous conditions faced by children and adolescents in regions where rare earth elements are extracted, calling for a moral awakening to these injustices.

Additionally, Pope Leo acknowledged the Catholic Church’s historical shortcomings in condemning transatlantic slavery and issued a personal apology, recognizing this as a wound in Christian memory.

The encyclical concludes with a call for collective responsibility in addressing AI’s risks, urging individuals and leaders alike to take action within their spheres of influence to ensure ethical development and use of technology.
