Pompano Beach opens first U.S. museum devoted to jellyfish

Pompano Beach, Fla. – A former Wells Fargo branch on the city’s north side has been transformed into the nation’s first museum dedicated solely to jellyfish. The 10,000‑square‑foot Jellyfish Museum opened this spring, providing a calm, educational space for families, students and tourists.

Founders Alex and Yana Yanovsky, who previously operated successful aquariums in Ukraine, fled their homeland after the 2022 Russian invasion and settled in Florida. Their passion for the ancient, translucent creatures led them to create the museum with the help of city‑provided redevelopment grants totaling about $100,000.

Exhibits and species

The museum houses roughly 20 unique jellyfish species from Florida waters and around the world, displayed in 21 rotating tanks. Visitors can see Japanese sea nettles, moon jellyfish, spotted jellies and the upside‑down jellyfish that inhabits Florida’s mangrove swamps. All specimens are sourced from licensed aquaculture partners, ensuring responsible acquisition.

Guides walk guests through the exhibits, explaining how jellyfish have survived more than 500 million years—long before dinosaurs or trees—thanks to their simple nerve net and ability to respond to environmental changes. “Their movement is mesmerizing, almost meditative, and they play an important role in marine ecosystems,” said Yana Yanovsky in a city‑issued statement.

Community impact

General manager Iryna Pelypkanych emphasized the museum’s goal of fostering stewardship of marine life. “We want people to leave feeling they know more about the population of jellyfish,” she said. The museum’s tranquil lighting, projected images and the soft glow of the saltwater tanks create an atmosphere designed for reflection and learning.

Local officials see the attraction as a boost to cultural tourism and an educational resource for schools. The museum’s opening follows a broader trend sparked by the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s permanent jellyfish gallery in 1996, which popularized jellyfish displays nationwide.

Future plans

Alex and Yana Yanovsky hope to expand the museum’s offerings, potentially adding new species and interactive programs. Their vision aligns with Pompano Beach’s ongoing efforts to revitalize downtown areas and provide family‑friendly destinations.

As the first U.S. museum of its kind, the Jellyfish Museum adds a unique cultural asset to the Treasure Coast, inviting residents and visitors alike to appreciate the quiet beauty of these ancient marine predators.
