Polk County honors retired K‑9 Ace after shooting and leg amputation

Polk County, Fla. – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office paid tribute to one of its most recognizable officers, a German Shepherd named Ace, on Tuesday. Ace, who was shot while deputies attempted to serve a warrant on a suspect in a child sex‑crimes case, survived the attack but required amputation of a front leg. Five days after the incident, Sheriff Grady Judd announced that the retired K‑9 remains “happy and energetic as ever.”

Incident and recovery

On August 9, deputies responded to a court‑order violation involving 27‑year‑old Angel Bowers, who had failed to appear for a child sex‑crimes hearing. While attempting to make contact, Bowers opened fire, striking Ace in the thigh. The suspect was subsequently shot and killed by multiple deputies. Ace was rushed to a veterinary facility, where surgeons amputated the damaged leg and treated his injuries. Despite the trauma, the dog’s recovery progressed quickly, and he was retired from active duty later that week.

Honoring a fallen hero

Tuesday’s ceremony took place at the sheriff’s headquarters. Ace, escorted by his handler, Deputy Natalie Oestreich, stood beside Sheriff Judd as the Polk County Board of County Commissioners presented a Commendation for Valor. Deputies and commissioners applauded, and Ace barked in response, prompting smiles from the assembled crowd.

“Ace embodies the courage and dedication of every officer in our department,” Sheriff Judd said in a social‑media post. “His willingness to put himself in harm’s way to protect our community is a testament to the bond between law‑enforcement and the animals that serve alongside us.”

Community response

Local residents, many of whom have followed Ace’s career on social media, expressed gratitude for his service. Several families who have visited the sheriff’s office with their children noted that Ace’s presence has helped demystify law‑enforcement work and teach respect for public safety officers.

Deputy Oestreich, who has worked with Ace for three years, said the dog’s upbeat demeanor continues to inspire both fellow deputies and the public. “Even after losing a leg, Ace still greets everyone with the same enthusiasm,” she said. “He reminds us that resilience and faith in our mission never waver.”

Looking ahead

While Ace will remain retired, the sheriff’s office plans to keep him at the headquarters as a mascot and morale booster. The department also announced a review of safety protocols for K‑9 units during high‑risk warrants, emphasizing the need for protective equipment and tactical planning.

Polk County officials hope the ceremony underscores the department’s commitment to honoring the sacrifices of both human and animal officers. The community’s warm reception of Ace’s story reflects a shared appreciation for service, courage, and the enduring partnership between law‑enforcement and their canine companions.
