Plano police partner with retailers to curb shoplifting in coordinated crackdown

Plano police officers teamed up with loss‑prevention staff from several large retailers for a coordinated effort to stop shoplifting across North Texas. The operation placed officers near high‑traffic stores such as Walmart, Home Depot, Sephora, H‑E‑B, Marshalls and Nordstrom Rack, where they observed suspicious activity and worked directly with store security personnel.

Police say retail crime hurts the whole community

Officer Jerry Minton of the Plano Police Department explained that the impact of retail theft extends beyond the merchants who lose merchandise. “Everybody pays for it. It’s not just the retailers, it’s everybody. It affects the prices, it affects security,” Minton said.

During the sweep, officers watched a loss‑prevention employee at a nearby Marshalls follow a suspect who had just taken items without paying. The suspect received a citation on the spot. The team then moved to a Nordstrom Rack where a woman was observed concealing two items in a paper bag and selecting three more before heading to a fitting room. When she emerged, she paid for the merchandise, avoiding further legal action.

Varied tactics, consistent response

Officer Minton noted that shoplifters use a range of methods, from slipping small items into pockets or clothing to using altered bags designed to block electronic sensors. “The quick answer is yes, it depends on what it is that they are trying to get away with. Some things will fit in your pocket,” he said.

He added that the police presence is intended to send a clear message: “Well, we’re out here — we take it seriously, it is a crime and you will be prosecuted.”

Collaboration through industry groups

The crackdown was organized through the Texas Organized Retail Crime Association and supported by Auror, a retail‑crime intelligence platform. By sharing information and resources, law‑enforcement agencies and retailers can more effectively identify and deter organized retail crime networks operating throughout the region.

Officer Minton emphasized that the partnership allows police to respond quickly to suspicious behavior, while retailers benefit from the added expertise of trained officers. “It’s always slow, boring until someone starts talking that they saw something and then your adrenaline picks up, heart rate, breathing and everything,” he said, describing the heightened alertness that comes with real‑time observation.

Community impact and next steps

Local business owners have welcomed the operation, noting that reduced theft helps keep prices stable for shoppers and preserves jobs that might otherwise be threatened by losses. The Plano Police Department plans to continue the joint effort, rotating officers through different retail locations to maintain a visible deterrent.

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity and to support the police‑retail partnership by staying vigilant in stores. As the operation proceeds, officials expect that the combined presence of law‑enforcement and loss‑prevention teams will further discourage organized theft and protect the economic health of the community.
