Santa Barbara – The annual Mary Jane McCord Planned Parenthood Book Sale, now held in Warren Hall at the Earl Warren Showgrounds, attracted a large crowd of volunteers and community members. “The community has come out in such a big way to support us this year it brings me to tears,” volunteer Joanne “JoJo” Snyder said, noting a 25 percent increase over last year.
Local enthusiasm and a single protest
Many attendees expressed appreciation for Planned Parenthood’s broader services. “I think around here most people tend to support Planned Parenthood, they do so many things for our community,” said volunteer Hala Evans. While one protester was present, Snyder emphasized respect for free speech, adding, “We understand everybody has free speech.”
Book selections and special offers
The sale featured tables of banned books, fiction, nonfiction, art, children’s titles, music, cooking, gardening, travel, mystery and more, replenished daily. Shoppers highlighted finds such as a Julia Child cookbook priced at $4, a local mystery novel, and a puzzle collection. The final day, Sunday, offers remaining books at 50 percent off, with free copies for registered nonprofits in the last hour.
Volunteer-driven effort
Planned Parenthood volunteers have collected books, vinyl, CDs, DVDs, games and puzzles year‑round, with a drop‑off location at 5729 Thornwood Dr. in Goleta. The event also sells books online through its website.
