Planes 670 Feet Apart in Boston Logan Incident

A preliminary investigation by the National Transportation and Safety Board found that two passenger flights were approximately 670 feet apart when a Delta plane had to abort its landing at Boston Logan International Airport last month.

Incident Details

The crew of Delta Air Lines Flight 2351, arriving from Dallas, executed a go-around at Boston’s airport around 11:30 a.m. on June due to American Airlines Flight 3161 departing from an intersecting runway.

A go-around is a safe, routine procedure performed at the discretion of a pilot or an air traffic controller to maintain safe operations. The investigation found that American Airlines flight first began advancing engine thrust levers to take off, they received a takeoff configuration warning.

The captain of the Delta flight reported seeing AAL3161 move forward slightly, then stop and remain stationary. The captain then told his first officer, who was flying the plane, to execute the go-around.

There were 131 passengers and five crewmembers aboard the Delta flight and 176 passengers and six crewmembers on the American flight. No one was hurt in this incident.
