Captain William Kidd, a pirate, buried his treasure in the Hamptons, a wealthy area on Long Island, New York. The treasure, which includes 40 pounds of gold, silver, silk, and precious rubies and stones, was hidden on Gardiner’s Island, a privately owned property.
A Surprising Life
Kidd’s life was not what one would expect from a pirate. He was married to Sarah Kidd and had two daughters. The family was part of New York’s high society, owning real estate and hosting dinner parties.
According to Daphne Palmer Geanacopoulos, author of A Pirate’s Wife: The Remarkable True Story of Sarah Kidd, Kidd was a normal guy who happened to be a pirate. Geanacopoulos says, ‘It’s easy to believe the lore of pirates, because people find it kind of sexy. You know, these are really hyper-masculine men who are out there, swinging swords and cutting people to pieces and coming around with bags of gold and that’s kind of like, you know, dashing and dark and it’s all of that.’
The story of Captain Kidd’s treasure is told in the new series ‘Crazy American History with Eric Shawn,’ now streaming on Fox Nation.
