The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has implemented artificial intelligence-based language translation software to improve communication with non-English speakers. This technology, which can be accessed through body-worn cameras, can translate 57 languages, including Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic.
Improving Public Safety
According to PCSO traffic sergeant John Mullins, the new system will greatly assist officers in communicating with non-English speakers, particularly in emergency situations. The technology has an accuracy rate of 90 to 95% and can reduce frustration with citizens, allowing for more fluid conversations.
The PCSO began a 90-day trial of the technology in November 2025 and received overwhelmingly positive feedback from participating deputies. The technology is now available to all certified law enforcement deputies in the field and at the Pinellas County Jail, as well as to multiple civilian team members, including probation officers and medics.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and the Tampa Police Department have also implemented similar language translation technology. The PCSO’s partnership with public safety technology company Axon, which manufactures the agency’s body cameras, made the implementation of this technology possible.
