Pilots Urge Congress to Address Aviation Safety Gaps Amid Travel Surge

As millions of Americans prepare for summer travel, pilots are raising concerns about the growing pressures on the U.S. aviation system. They emphasize the need for Congress to address safety gaps that could compromise the system’s reliability. The U.S. aviation system is renowned for its safety, built on layers of protection including skilled pilots, rigorous training, and strong standards. However, increasing air traffic, aging infrastructure, and identified gaps in safety technology are putting this system under strain.

Recent Incidents Highlight Safety Concerns

Over the past 15 months, several incidents have underscored these concerns. A fatal midair collision near Washington National Airport and a deadly runway collision at LaGuardia are just two examples of the system’s vulnerabilities. An aging air traffic control system and persistent staffing shortages further exacerbate these issues.

To mitigate these risks, pilots are calling for sustained investment in technology, infrastructure, and personnel. This includes modernizing air traffic control systems and ensuring adequate staffing levels. While Congress has made initial investments, ongoing funding is crucial to keep pace with increasing airspace demands.

Technology Upgrades Needed

Pilots also advocate for equipping aircraft with the latest technology. The House-passed ALERT Act addresses some safety concerns, but pilots argue it doesn’t go far enough. They support the Senate-passed ROTOR Act, which mandates a full ADS-B In safety suite. This technology provides pilots with real-time information about nearby aircraft, enhancing their ability to prevent collisions.

Currently, commercial aircraft near major U.S. airports are required to use ADS-B Out, which broadcasts a plane’s location and other data. However, ADS-B In, which allows pilots to receive and display this information, is not yet mandatory. The ROTOR Act would require this technology, providing pilots with a clearer picture of nearby aircraft and early alerts for potential collisions.

As summer travel surges, pilots urge Congress to listen to their concerns and take decisive action. By integrating the best elements of both the ROTOR and ALERT Acts, lawmakers can strengthen the safety layers that protect millions of passengers. The aviation system remains safe, but addressing these gaps is essential to maintaining its integrity.
