Photographer Sarah Silbiger and her partner Jason Bernert traveled across the United States in a 23-foot Winnebago EKKO, capturing the country’s diverse landscapes and quirky attractions. Silbiger, a freelance photojournalist, had previously covered politics in Washington, D.C., but sought a change of pace and a chance to explore the country.
America Through the Lens
Silbiger’s photographs, titled ‘Wanderer’s Window,’ showcase the beauty and eccentricity of America, from the grandeur of the Sierra Nevada mountain range to the kitsch of a 12-foot tall, 700-pound inflatable lobster in Maine. The couple’s journey took them to 35 states, where they encountered a wide range of landscapes, cultures, and experiences.
Silbiger’s creative vision for the series was sparked by a photo she took at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California’s Alabama Hills. The photo, which features jagged mountain peaks shrouded in low-hanging clouds, was taken through the van’s window and captures the essence of the American wilderness.
Throughout their journey, Silbiger and Bernert faced challenges in capturing the perfect shot, often having to reposition their van to get the right angle. However, the end result was well worth the effort, as Silbiger’s photographs provide a unique perspective on the American landscape and its many wonders.
