Philadelphia rally urges officials to keep Academy of Natural Sciences open

On Tuesday, dozens of Philadelphia residents, students, and science advocates assembled in Center City to demand that state and city officials keep the Academy of Natural Sciences museum open. The rally, organized by Philadelphia Science Action and Green Philly, came just days after the museum announced it would close its doors to the public on September 30.

Local voices stress the museum’s role in education and community

“The Academy is not just a building filled with collections. It’s a gathering place for Philadelphia’s environmental and scientific community,” said Julie Hancher of Green Philly. Attendees echoed that sentiment, highlighting the museum’s nearly 200‑year legacy of providing hands‑on learning experiences for schoolchildren and families.

Political leaders engaged in preservation talks

Former U.S. Ambassador to Canada and Philadelphia attorney David Cohen is working with the offices of Governor Josh Shapiro and Mayor Cherelle Parker to explore a partnership between the Academy and Drexel University. Cohen hopes the collaboration will preserve the museum’s research programs and public exhibitions while addressing budgetary concerns that led to the closure announcement.

Governor Shapiro’s office has not issued a formal statement on the rally, but a spokesperson noted that the administration is reviewing “all options to support vital cultural institutions.” Mayor Parker’s office similarly indicated a willingness to discuss potential solutions that keep the museum serving the city’s youth.

Why the Academy matters to Philadelphians

The Academy of Natural Sciences, founded in 1825, houses extensive collections of fossils, minerals, and biodiversity specimens. It has long partnered with local schools for field trips, after‑school programs, and teacher‑training workshops. Community members fear that its closure would leave a gap in science education, especially for families in underserved neighborhoods.

“Losing the Academy would be a loss for our children’s curiosity and future workforce,” said Maria Torres, a mother of two who attended the rally. “We need places where kids can see real science, not just read about it online.”

Next steps and how residents can help

Organizers urged participants to contact their state representatives and city council members, urging them to allocate emergency funding or approve a joint venture with Drexel University. They also asked the public to sign a petition circulating on the Philadelphia Science Action website.

While the September 30 deadline looms, supporters remain hopeful that a collaborative solution will emerge, preserving the Academy’s role as a cornerstone of Philadelphia’s scientific and cultural life.
