Philadelphia names first Rat Abatement Manager to lead citywide rodent control effort

Philadelphia is taking a coordinated approach to its longstanding rodent problem. On Wednesday, Mayor Cherelle L. Parker announced the appointment of Adrian Jordan, a veteran of the city’s Health Department, as the first ever Rat Abatement Manager. Jordan will oversee a citywide strategy that brings multiple departments together to prioritize and address rat issues quickly.

New leadership and a focused action plan

Jordan, who has spent more than two decades fighting rats in the city, said he looks forward to working directly with colleagues across city agencies. “I’ve worked to fight rats in Philadelphia for more than twenty years, and I am looking forward to being able to work directly with colleagues from departments across the City to ensure that we are properly prioritizing this,” he told reporters.

The administration’s “One Philly” approach, which emphasizes inter‑departmental collaboration, will now include a dedicated manager to steer the effort. The mayor explained that the expanded approach begins with the lower Northeast, targeting neighborhoods such as Oxford Circle and Castor Gardens.

Door‑to‑door surveys to hear residents

City officials will conduct door‑to‑door surveys in the identified areas to gather community concerns, even when no formal complaint has been filed. The surveys are intended to pinpoint problem spots, allowing crews to respond promptly and provide practical guidance for residents on steps they can take to reduce rat activity.

“Philadelphia residents deserve clean and safe blocks,” said Carlton Williams, Managing Director of the city’s Department of Public Health. “By establishing a dedicated Rat Abatement Manager, we are strengthening our commitment to the basic services residents rely on every day.”

Online dashboard for transparency

In addition to field surveys, the city plans to launch an online dashboard that will track resident contacts, complaints, and properties serviced. The tool will be posted on the city’s website in the coming weeks, giving the public real‑time insight into the city’s rodent‑control activities.

Officials noted that, despite recent media reports of increased complaints, the city has not documented a rise in confirmed rat incidents. The new manager and the dashboard are intended to ensure that any emerging issues are identified and addressed before they become widespread.

City Council support

Earlier this month, Philadelphia City Council unanimously approved a resolution urging multiple city departments to coordinate their efforts on rat infestations. The council’s backing underscores the broad municipal commitment to a cleaner, safer city.

Residents can also report rat sightings directly through the Health Department’s website, where they will find tips on sanitation, waste management, and property maintenance that help deter rodents.

What families can do now

While the city ramps up its professional response, families are encouraged to keep trash securely covered, eliminate standing water, and seal entry points around homes. Simple actions, combined with the city’s new resources, can make a significant difference in reducing rodent populations.

Philadelphia’s proactive stance on rodent control reflects a broader commitment to delivering essential services that protect neighborhoods and support the well‑being of families across the city.
