Philadelphia Cycling Classic Returns After Decade with Men’s and Women’s Races

After a ten‑year hiatus, the Philadelphia Cycling Classic, presented by AmeriGas, makes its grand return to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway on Sunday, August 30. The race, a staple of American cycling since 1985, will draw professional men’s and women’s fields along a 14.4‑mile circuit that showcases some of the city’s most beloved neighborhoods.

Race details and schedule

The weekend kicks off on Saturday, August 29, with an individual time trial sanctioned by USA Cycling. The 8‑mile out‑and‑back course follows Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, turning around at the Falls Bridge. The time trial runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering cyclists a chance to test their speed before the main events.

On Sunday, the women’s UCI 1.1 race begins at 8:30 a.m., followed by the men’s UCI 1.1 race at noon. Award ceremonies are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively. Both races will tackle the famed Manayunk Wall – a 17 percent grade climb that challenges riders’ strength and endurance.

Community celebration and charity ride

Alongside the competition, the Philadelphia Cycling Classic Fan Fest offers a two‑day celebration of cycling and community. More than 150 vendors will line the festival grounds, providing food, beverages, bike demos, and merchandise. The first 2,000 guests receive a complimentary Musette bag, and live music from local DJs will keep the atmosphere lively.

The event also supports a worthy cause. The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) serves as the official charity partner for the 2026 Philadelphia Cycling Classic Charity Ride. Participants can register online to ride the iconic loop and raise funds for lifesaving cancer research.

Viewing options

Fans who cannot attend in person can watch full coverage on 6abc.com, the 6abc mobile app, the 6abc streaming TV app, Disney+, and any platform that streams 6abc. Action News will provide daytime updates, with post‑race coverage airing at 5:30 p.m.

Road closures and safety

To accommodate the event, several streets will be closed. The inner lanes of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway from 20th Street to Binswanger Triangle close Thursday, August 27, at 9 a.m. and remain shut through Sunday, August 30, at 10 p.m. Outer lanes reopen Friday, August 28, at 6 a.m. Additional closures affect Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Sedgley Drive, Kelly Drive, and numerous side streets. Drivers are urged to plan alternate routes and follow posted signage.

Why the Classic matters

The Philadelphia Cycling Classic is more than a race; it’s a celebration of the city’s rich cycling heritage and a boost to local businesses. Spectators line the streets at every point of the circuit, cheering world‑class athletes while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of neighborhoods like Manayunk, Roxborough, and Fairmount Park. The event also highlights the city’s commitment to charitable causes, bringing together athletes, families, and community members for a common purpose.
