Evanston family reunited with dog missing for 12 years after volunteer search

When Vanessa Antonino left for work twelve years ago, she never imagined she would be without her beloved dog, Flor, for the rest of her life. The Evanston, Illinois resident lost the four‑year‑old canine on the north side of Chicago, and the loss lingered through a decade of hardship, moves, and the birth of four children.

From hardship to hope

Antonino recalled living out of her car during the period when Flor disappeared, saying the dog was her constant companion through those uncertain times. “I left her in the car like always, and when I came back out, she was gone,” she told NBC Chicago. The memory of Flor remained a daily presence in her home, with the children growing up hearing stories of their “big sister” who had vanished.

Volunteer effort cracks the case

Earlier this month, a volunteer from the Evanston Animal Shelter learned that a dog matching Flor’s description had been found near a road in Gary, Indiana, after severe weather damage. The find was made by a Louisiana volunteer assisting with storm cleanup. “She was obviously scared she was going to get hit,” said volunteer Gillian Primavera.

The rescued dog was taken to Griffith Animal Control, where the nonprofit group Microchip Hunters stepped in. The organization specializes in locating pets with “dead‑end” microchips—chips whose contact information is outdated or missing. In Flor’s case, the chip’s phone number was no longer current, but the chip itself confirmed her identity.

Reunion in Evanston

Jeanette Garlow, co‑director of Lost Dogs Illinois, coordinated the return. A shelter volunteer drove Flor back to Evanston, where Antonino waited anxiously. “I just bawled,” Antonino said, describing the moment she saw Flor again. “I broke down completely. A piece of my heart was back with me.”

Garlow emphasized the broader lesson: pet owners should microchip their animals and keep contact details up to date. “Accidents happen, and once a pet is missing, it is too late to have them microchipped,” she warned, underscoring that timely information can make reunions possible even after many years.

Community impact

The story has resonated throughout the Chicago suburbs, highlighting the dedication of local volunteers and animal‑control agencies. It also serves as a reminder to families that simple preventive steps—like microchipping—protect cherished pets and can bring closure to long‑standing mysteries.

Flor’s return is a testament to the power of community cooperation, faith in perseverance, and the enduring bond between families and their animals.
