With the Fourth of July approaching, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa is reminding people to protect their pets from the stress of loud fireworks. The ARL recommends updating ID tags and microchip information, creating a quiet indoor safe space, and keeping pets inside with curtains closed.
Preparing a Safe Zone
The ARL suggests setting up a safe zone for pets in an interior room or the lowest level of the house to minimize the sound of fireworks. Choose a room where your pet feels most comfortable, and add their kennel or bed for extra comfort, along with some toys. Once the fireworks begin, place your pet in the safe zone and close the door until the show is over.
Pets should always be kept indoors during fireworks displays. The ARL also suggests turning on the TV or radio to play familiar sounds that your pet hears regularly, which can help keep them calm. Consider using calming pet care items, such as sprays, collars, and shirts designed to relax cats and dogs during stressful situations like fireworks.
If your pet becomes overstimulated by fireworks, the ARL recommends talking to your veterinarian about pet anxiety medication options. These medications are typically administered before stressful events and can be effective in calming your pet.
