The Perry County Commission District Number One Race is currently tied after a recount. The initial results showed challenger Donald Bennett winning by one vote over incumbent Commissioner Albert Turner Jr., but the recount revealed a 398-398 dead heat.
Commissioner Turner’s contest of the election was initially denied by Perry County Democratic Executive Committee Chairman Carlton Hogue due to a filing deadline issue. However, the state executive committee later found that Turner’s recount request was properly submitted before the deadline.
The recount involved re-running ballots through the county’s tabulation equipment and reviewing absentee and provisional ballots according to Alabama law. The Turner campaign claims that irregularities occurred during the May 19 election and has requested neutral third-party oversight.
The winner of the race remains unresolved, pending the executive committee’s next action. Since there is no Republican candidate on the November 3rd General Election ballot, the winner of the Democratic Party primary will be the District One winner.
