Alabama’s Tax-Free School Supply Holiday begins this Friday, providing parents with an opportunity to save on state and local taxes for school supplies, clothing, books, and computers. The holiday will last until midnight Sunday.
Details of the Tax Holiday
Thanks to the Alabama Legislature, this year’s exemptions have expanded, increasing the dollar thresholds and indexing them to the Consumer Price Index. Items such as pencils, paper, binders, calculators, and rulers will be free from state sales tax.
Governor Ivey encouraged parents to take advantage of the tax break, stating that quality education is essential for the state’s continued growth. Commissioner of Revenue Mary Martin Mitchell also expressed enthusiasm for the tax-free opportunity, encouraging Alabama families to make the most of it.
The state and most municipalities and counties are participating in the annual tax holiday. A list of participating cities and counties, as well as covered items, can be found on the official website.
