Perot Park’s Little Zoo Keeps Surprising People

Most people driving down Spruce Street assume the zoo is for kids under eight and grandparents with nowhere else to be. That assumption lasts about as long as it takes a red-tailed hawk to fix you with a stare that makes you feel personally judged.

The Texarkana Zoo at Spring Lake Park sits on the Arkansas side of the city, tucked into a stretch of green that most out-of-towners wouldn’t find without directions. It’s a small municipal zoo — roughly thirteen acres — and it doesn’t pretend otherwise. No giraffes, no pandas, no IMAX. What it does have is a surprisingly coherent collection of native and regional wildlife, maintained well enough that the enclosures look like actual habitats rather than concrete slabs with a chain-link front door.

The raptors are a highlight. The zoo rehabilitates birds that can’t be released — great horned owls, red-tailed hawks, a bald eagle that arrived injured and stayed — and houses them in a flight structure that lets you get closer than you’d expect. The eagle in particular has a way of standing completely still and looking through you, which is either majestic or deeply unsettling depending on your mood. The birds of prey exhibit is the kind of thing you don’t expect to find in a free municipal zoo in a town of 70,000, and yet.

Yes, free. Admission is free, parking is free, and nobody’s going to upsell you on a premium package or a photo op with a sedated lemur. There’s a nominal fee for some special programming and the train ride that loops the park grounds — a couple of dollars, cash or card — but walking the zoo itself costs nothing. On a weekday morning in spring or fall, you might have whole sections to yourself.

The big cats area draws the longest pauses. A mountain lion and a bobcat share that section of the grounds, and while neither of them is performing for the crowd, there’s something about being three feet of glass away from a mountain lion that recalibrates your sense of scale. Children tend to go quiet, which is its own kind of achievement.

The petting zoo section at the far end runs a little ragged by late afternoon — the goats have opinions and don’t keep them to themselves — but earlier in the day it’s calm enough to be pleasant. The zoo staff and volunteers are genuinely knowledgeable and not in a rush, which makes a difference if you have questions or if your kid wants to stand and watch the river otters for fifteen minutes straight.

Spring and fall are the best times to come. Summer in Texarkana is brutal, the shade is uneven, and some animals retreat into their shelters during peak afternoon heat. Weekend mornings from late March through May tend to be the sweet spot — weather manageable, crowds light, animals active. Avoid the first Saturday of any big event weekend downtown; parking in the Spring Lake area fills faster than you’d think.

It’s not trying to be a destination zoo and it doesn’t need to be. It’s a well-run, genuinely interesting place that earns more time than most visitors initially plan to give it. That hawk will make sure of it.
