PepsiCo cuts 143 jobs as Cheverly bottling plant shuts down operations

PepsiCo Beverages confirmed that its bottling plant in Cheverly, Maryland, will cease manufacturing and warehouse operations, resulting in the termination of 143 employees. The layoffs took effect on September 14 and affect workers across fleet, transport, manufacturing and production roles.

Impact on the local workforce

All 143 employees at the Cheverly location are being let go, with nearly 98 of those workers belonging to a union. The company said it will provide transition support, resources, and continued pay and benefits through November 13 to help affected staff adjust to the change.

Reason for the shutdown

According to a company spokesperson, shifting consumer demand and advances in technology have driven the decision. PepsiCo emphasized the need to modernize its network to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving market.

Continuity of service

Despite the closure of manufacturing and warehouse functions, the company assured customers that sales and delivery operations will continue without disruption. The statement highlighted the facility’s six‑decade history of serving both the business and the surrounding community.

Community response

Local leaders and community members expressed concern over the loss of jobs in a region already facing employment challenges. While the plant has been a longstanding employer, officials noted the importance of attracting new businesses and retraining programs to mitigate the impact on families.

What’s next for the site?

PepsiCo has not disclosed immediate plans for the Cheverly property. The company’s statement indicated that the decision was not made lightly and that it remains committed to supporting the community during the transition period.

As the local economy adjusts, the layoffs underscore broader trends in the beverage industry, where companies are consolidating operations and investing in automation to meet changing consumer preferences.
