Pennsylvania records fourth measles death as outbreak spreads across 28 counties

Pennsylvania health officials confirmed a fourth death linked to measles, the highest number of measles fatalities in the United States in decades. The latest victim was a 40‑year‑old unvaccinated woman from Jefferson County, bringing the state’s death toll to four.

Outbreak details and recent cases

Since the start of the 2026 outbreak, the Pennsylvania Department of Health has recorded 693 measles cases across 28 counties. The state previously reported two infant deaths in Lancaster County, one of which a newborn whose death was later determined not to be caused by the virus. The other infant, a six‑week‑old with a genetic condition called Amish lethal microcephaly, did succumb to measles.

Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has logged more than 3,200 measles cases in 2026, though it has not yet recorded any measles deaths for the year.

Health impact and vaccination guidance

Measles remains highly contagious. The CDC notes that roughly one in five unvaccinated individuals who contract measles require hospitalization, and about one in twenty children develop pneumonia, the leading cause of measles‑related death in young children. Additionally, one in 1,000 infected children may experience encephalitis, a serious brain inflammation.

The virus is lethal in one to three of every 1,000 infected children. The MMR (measles‑mumps‑rubella) vaccine provides 97% protection after two doses and has been safely used since 1963. Side effects are typically mild and resolve without medical intervention.

Official response

Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen expressed sympathy for the families affected and emphasized the state’s commitment to curbing the outbreak. “We remain committed to working with our partners across Pennsylvania to stem this outbreak and prevent more deaths. That means ensuring people have the facts about measles and access to the MMR vaccine – which kept measles outbreaks at bay for decades,” she said in a statement.

State officials continue to coordinate with local health departments to increase vaccine availability, promote public education, and monitor case numbers closely.

Political backdrop

The outbreak has sparked a partisan debate over vaccine policy. Governor Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, previously declined federal assistance from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, citing concerns about misinformation surrounding vaccines. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a vocal vaccine skeptic, accused the governor of politicizing the disease, suggesting the deaths might be fabricated to advance a narrative about measles severity.

Both sides have presented their perspectives, but health experts stress that the data on case counts and fatalities are based on medical examinations and CDC reporting standards.

What residents can do

Residents are urged to verify their vaccination status and obtain the two‑dose MMR series if they have not already done so. Local clinics and pharmacies across Pennsylvania are offering the vaccine without charge for those without insurance.

For up‑to‑date information on the outbreak, Pennsylvania residents can visit the state health department’s website or contact their county health department.
