Penn State fraternity houses implicated in cocaine trafficking ring, 14 charged

State Attorney General Dave Sunday disclosed Monday that a cocaine trafficking operation tied to two Penn State fraternity houses has resulted in 14 criminal charges. The indictment includes 13 current or former Penn State students and one other individual.

Alleged leaders and charges

The alleged ringleader, 24‑year‑old Agostino Abbatiello, surrendered after missing a scheduled arraignment. He faces charges of possession with intent to deliver and conspiracy and has been ordered jailed without bail. Court documents indicate the operation ran during 2023 and 2024, sourcing bulk cocaine from contacts in Philadelphia and New York.

Fraternity involvement

According to the indictment, the drugs were cut and bagged at the Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon fraternity houses located off the Penn State campus. Fraternity brothers and pledges were used as labor, and the finished product was distributed through the student body. One defendant described a co‑accused as the “largest distributor of cocaine” at Penn State, boasting about the profits generated.

Additional defendants

Four of the accused are current students, while the remaining ten are alumni or other affiliates. Charges range from felony conspiracy, dealing in proceeds of unlawful activity, and corrupt organization offenses to misdemeanor drug possession. Paul Robinson, the father of a student also charged, faces felony tampering, hindering apprehension, and obstruction charges for allegedly concealing evidence, including a safe containing drugs and cash.

University response

Penn State placed the Delta Upsilon chapter on interim suspension. The university noted that Sigma Chi is not a recognized fraternity and therefore falls outside its direct oversight. Delta Upsilon Executive Director Justin Kirk said any members linked to the ring have been expelled or suspended. Sigma Chi Executive Director Michael Church announced the suspension of the three charged members and an interim halt to all chapter operations while the university determines whether the allegations reflect individual conduct or organized chapter activity.

Attorney General’s statement

Attorney General Sunday called the conduct “very serious” and emphasized that “there was nothing junior or childlike about this type of conduct.” He described the operation as an “upper‑level trafficking organization for this region in Pennsylvania.”

Legal outlook

The defendants face a range of penalties, from jail time for felony convictions to potential fines and probation for misdemeanor offenses. The case underscores ongoing concerns about illicit drug activity on college campuses and the responsibility of fraternities to uphold community standards.
