Pedal Into the Pines: A First Ride on the Phil’s Trail Complex Will Ruin All Other Trails for You

There are trails, and then there is Phil’s Trail Complex. If you have ever wondered what it feels like to be genuinely giddy on a mountain bike — or even just on foot, with the ponderosa pines towering above you and the volcanic dirt giving just enough under your tires — then you owe yourself a morning on the west side of Bend. Phil’s is not a single trail but rather an entire interconnected network of roughly 35 miles of singletrack, fire roads, and connector paths woven through Bureau of Land Management land just minutes from the Old Mill District. It is, without exaggeration, one of the finest trail systems in the Pacific Northwest, and it sits right in Bend’s backyard like the town’s best-kept bragging right.

I pulled into the Phil’s Trail trailhead off Skyliners Road on a Tuesday morning, and even then the parking area had a respectable showing of pickups with bike racks, dog-friendly SUVs, and a couple of trail runners stretching by the kiosk. The trailhead is easy to find — head west on Galveston Avenue, which rolls into Skyliners Road, and you will see the turnoff on your left. There is a good printed map at the kiosk, but downloading the Trailforks app before you go is genuinely worth doing. The network has enough named trails — Phil’s, Whit’s, Paul’s, Mo’s, and more — that a little navigation help keeps the adventure from turning into a puzzle.

What makes Phil’s so special is its range. Beginners can stick to the mellower doubletrack connector sections and still feel the full romance of riding through open pine forest with views nudging toward the Cascades. Intermediate riders will find themselves grinning through rollers, berms, and punchy little climbs on trails like Phil’s itself, which threads through the trees with a rhythm that feels almost choreographed. And if you are an experienced rider looking for something to test your technical read? Catch and Release and a handful of the steeper descents off the upper network will ask real questions of your bike handling. Nobody leaves disappointed.

Trail runners and hikers are equally welcome here, and honestly the vibe on Phil’s is one of the most collegial I have encountered anywhere. Bikers yield to hikers, dogs trot along on leash, and people wave. It has that rare quality of a place that draws out the best in people because the place itself is just so good it puts everyone in a decent mood.

The high desert light through the ponderosa canopy is its own reward at any hour, but the morning window — roughly 7 to 10 a.m. — is something else. The air still carries a cool edge, the light slants golden through the trees, and the trail surface is at its firmest. Plan for two to three hours if you want to string together a satisfying loop, and bring more water than you think you need. Elevation changes are moderate but consistent, and the dry Central Oregon air is sneakily dehydrating.

Rentals are available from several Bend bike shops nearby if you did not bring your own rig. Hutchinson’s Bike Shoppe and Sunnyside Sports both offer quality rentals and can point you toward the right loop for your ability level. Shuttle your car if you want to ride point-to-point, or make a big loop and earn every descent on the way back.

Phil’s Trail Complex is the kind of place that makes you understand why people move to Bend and never leave. One ride in and you will start doing the math on how often you could reasonably come back. The answer, for the record, is as often as possible.
