Payton Prep Parents Face Ticket Shortage Days Before Graduation

Parents at Walter Payton College Preparatory High School in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood are facing a last-minute challenge as the school announced a reduction in graduation tickets just four days before the ceremony. Initially, families were promised five tickets per graduate for the event at Symphony Center, with the option to purchase two additional tickets. However, an email sent by senior steering committee adviser Jason Chau revealed that only four tickets per student would be available, citing a series of misunderstandings and the large graduating class size as reasons for the change.

Community Response

The announcement has left many families scrambling to adjust their plans. Paulina Caprio, whose twin daughters are graduating, expressed frustration over the timing and the fact that the news came from a teacher rather than Principal Fareeda Shabazz Anderson. Caprio noted that families had already made travel arrangements based on the initial ticket allocation.

Another parent, Victoria Thamat, shared her disappointment as her son’s older siblings will now miss the ceremony. Thamat emphasized the importance of family presence at such a significant milestone, highlighting the emotional impact of the ticket shortage.

School’s Apology and Solutions

In response to the concerns, Principal Shabazz Anderson issued an apology for the confusion and inconvenience caused by the last-minute change. She acknowledged the importance of the graduation ceremony for families and took full responsibility for the miscommunication. The school has provided an online form for families to request or offer extra tickets, with a deadline set for Thursday evening. Additionally, the ceremony will be livestreamed to accommodate those unable to attend in person.

Walter Payton College Prep, recognized as one of the top high schools in Illinois, has a graduating class of 346 students this year, the largest in its history. Despite the ticket challenges, the school remains committed to celebrating the achievements of its students and ensuring that families can partake in this special occasion, even if virtually.
