Amtrak to close A‑Interlocking track in Washington for nine‑day upgrade in October

Washington, D.C. – Beginning after the close of service on Friday, Oct. 16, Amtrak will temporarily shut down a critical stretch of track known as the A‑Interlocking inside the First Street Tunnel. The nine‑day outage, scheduled to end before trains resume on the morning of Monday, Oct. 26, is intended to replace aging switches and crossovers that have exceeded their service life.

Why the shutdown matters for local travelers

The A‑Interlocking segment serves as the primary routing point for all Amtrak and Virginia Railway Express (VRE) trains traveling between Union Station and destinations south into Virginia. Because the existing equipment now requires a mandatory 10‑mph speed restriction, the infrastructure limits the reliability of daily commuter and intercity service.

During the upgrade, passengers can expect significant changes to scheduled routes. Amtrak has listed the affected routes and will coordinate with the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority, VRE and the North Carolina Department of Transportation to keep riders informed of service adjustments.

What riders can expect

Travelers heading south of the District will be offered rebooking options, alternative travel arrangements and on‑site customer assistance throughout the outage. Amtrak says the project will modernize the tunnel’s control systems, lift the speed restriction and improve overall reliability, helping to prevent future unplanned disruptions.

Both Amtrak and VRE have urged passengers to plan ahead, check updated schedules and consider using other transit options, such as Metro or regional bus services, while the work is underway.

Community impact

The temporary closure underscores the importance of maintaining aging transportation infrastructure in the nation’s capital. By addressing the deteriorating switches now, the agencies aim to safeguard the daily commutes of thousands of residents, students and workers who rely on rail service to travel between Washington and the surrounding suburbs.

Local officials have not indicated any additional public‑works projects tied to the upgrade, but the effort aligns with broader regional goals to keep the rail network safe and efficient for families and commuters alike.
