A recent poll by the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin found that Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico are virtually tied in the Texas Senate race, with Paxton leading by a single percentage point, 43% to 42%.
Poll Results
The poll, which surveyed 1,200 self-reported registered voters from June 5 to 12, indicates that Paxton has made significant gains since the April survey, when he trailed Talarico by 8 percentage points. The latest poll shows that 84% of Republican voters have moved on from the bitter GOP primary and now support Paxton, a 21-percentage-point shift from the previous poll.
Talarico, on the other hand, has maintained his support among Democrats and independents, with 5% of Republicans saying they would back him. The poll also found that Talarico leads among voters under the age of 65, those with a two-year college degree or more, and female voters.
Demographic Breakdown
The poll revealed that Paxton is leading among male voters by 9 points, while Talarico is ahead among Hispanic voters by 14 points. Additionally, around two-thirds of Black voters said they would vote for Talarico, although this is short of the proportion who have voted for past Democratic Senate nominees in Texas.
The poll also found that Republicans are leading in other statewide races, including the gubernatorial race, where Gov. Greg Abbott is ahead of Democratic state Rep. Gina Hinojosa by 7 percentage points.
