Paul Rudd Questions Airline Etiquette in Podcast Appearance

Hollywood actor Paul Rudd recently stirred a conversation about airline etiquette during his appearance on Jake Shane’s podcast, “Therapuss.” Rudd humorously criticized several common airline instructions, including the requirement to switch phones to airplane mode, calling it “nonsense.”

Debate on Airplane Mode

Rudd’s comments came during a discussion on the May 28 episode, where he questioned the necessity of certain pre-takeoff and landing instructions, such as putting tray tables away and returning seats to the upright position. When specifically asked about airplane mode, Rudd reiterated his skepticism, stating, “I know it’s nonsense.”

Podcast host Jake Shane responded by noting he uses airplane mode to save battery, acknowledging that cellular service is unavailable during flights anyway. Despite Rudd’s doubts, the Federal Aviation Administration mandates that passengers activate airplane mode or disable cellular connections to prevent interference with cockpit communications.

Standing After Landing

The podcast also touched on the contentious topic of whether passengers should stand immediately after landing. Shane admitted to standing up upon arrival, a practice Rudd defended, suggesting it was acceptable. This behavior has divided travelers, with some citing the need to stretch or catch tight connections, while others view it as inconsiderate.

Etiquette expert Diane Gottsman, based in Texas, advised that passengers remain seated unless there is ample space to move comfortably, warning that pushing into the aisle is a breach of etiquette.

Personal Anecdotes

Beyond airline etiquette, Rudd shared a cherished memory with his wife, Julie Yaeger, recalling a spontaneous trip to Atlantic City that turned into a perfect night. The couple enjoyed a complimentary hotel suite, concert tickets, and a winning streak at video poker.

Rudd and Yaeger, married since 2003, have two children. The actor’s latest film, “Power Ballad,” premiered on May 29.
