New England Patriots fans got a taste of excitement early in the 2026 NFL season when quarterback Drake Maye led a decisive two‑minute drive against the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium. With the game hanging in the balance, Maye rolled to his right on a third‑and‑five and launched a 23‑yard pass that found rookie wide receiver Efton Chism III in the end zone.
Chism’s breakout catch
Chism, a 24‑year‑old undrafted free agent who joined the Patriots last season, displayed poise and athleticism reminiscent of a young Odell Beckham Jr. The ball arrived at his fingertips as he leapt over a defender, securing a spectacular catch that put the Patriots ahead. The play was followed by a successful two‑point conversion, extending New England’s lead to three points.
Impact on the game
The touchdown proved pivotal. Buffalo’s quarterback Josh Allen, who had been effective earlier, was unable to generate a game‑changing drive in the final minutes. His pass into tight coverage was intercepted, sealing the Patriots’ 20‑17 victory. The win moved New England to a 2‑2 record, snapping Buffalo’s unbeaten start.
What the win means for New England
With star receiver A.J. Brown sidelined by injury, the Patriots have been searching for reliable targets. Chism’s performance may earn him increased playing time and a larger role in the offense moving forward. Coach Bill Belichick praised the rookie’s effort, noting that “players who step up when the team needs them are the ones who earn our trust.”
Looking ahead
The Patriots now turn their attention to the next week’s matchup, hoping to build on the momentum generated by Maye’s leadership and Chism’s playmaking ability. Buffalo, meanwhile, will look to rebound from its first loss and rely on Allen’s arm to get the offense back on track.
For fans following the Patriots’ early‑season journey, Chism’s touchdown serves as a reminder that depth and perseverance can turn a close contest into a victory. As the season progresses, the emergence of young talent like Chism could prove vital in the Patriots’ quest for playoff contention.
