Saturday Morning at Sterritt’s Cider Mill Wasn’t Enough

Nine-fifteen on a Saturday in October, and the parking lot off Schoenherr is already half full. Not because anyone told people to show up early. Just because word travels in Warren, and the word about Sterritt’s cider mill season is: go before noon or accept that the donuts will be gone.

Sterritt’s has been on the east side of Warren long enough that most regulars can’t remember not knowing about it. It’s a farm market first — produce, mums, pumpkins stacked in that satisfying architectural way people photograph but rarely buy — but the cider mill operation is what pulls the crowds in fall. The pressing happens on-site, which means the cider you’re buying was apple juice roughly an hour ago. You can taste the difference. It’s not refrigerator-aisle sweet; it has some bite to it, a little tannin, the kind of flavor that makes you wonder why you ever bought the shelf-stable stuff.

The donuts are cake-style, fried fresh, rolled in cinnamon sugar, and served warm in paper bags that immediately go translucent with grease. That’s not a complaint. A half-dozen runs you about four dollars, which feels like a pricing error in the current economy. They don’t hold well — they’re best eaten in the parking lot before you’ve made it back to the car, which is exactly what most people do. You’ll see entire families standing next to minivans, just eating donuts in the October air, and nobody thinks this is strange.

The market itself operates spring through fall, with the cider season running from late August through October, sometimes into early November depending on the harvest. In summer, the sweet corn and tomatoes are the draw. In September, the peaches. But fall is when Sterritt’s earns its reputation. They bring in pumpkins of every inconvenient size, gourds in shades that shouldn’t exist in nature, and Indian corn that people buy for porches and then forget to throw away until March.

There’s no admission fee, no hayride upsell, no costumed character asking if your kid wants a photo. It’s a farm market with a cider press and a donut fryer, and it doesn’t try to be anything else. That restraint is, in 2024, actually somewhat radical.

Budget roughly ten to twenty dollars if you’re buying cider, donuts, and a pumpkin or two. A gallon of fresh cider is usually around seven or eight bucks. If you show up close to closing — they typically wrap up around six — you might catch markdowns on produce, but the donuts will absolutely be sold out, so manage your expectations accordingly.

Go on a weekday if you want breathing room. Go on a Saturday morning if you want the full experience, which includes a fair amount of cheerful crowding and at least one golden retriever. Either way, bring cash; the line moves faster. And if you’re the kind of person who needs to optimize the trip, pair it with a stop somewhere nearby — Sterritt’s is in and out in fifteen minutes if you know what you want, which after one visit, you will.

It’s not a destination that requires a pitch. It just requires a free morning and a reasonable tolerance for cinnamon sugar on your jacket.
