A recent Reuters/Ipsos survey found that 64% of Republicans plan to display the American flag on July 4, compared to just 27% of Democrats. The poll, conducted among 1,537 U.S. adults, also revealed significant differences in how Americans view the national holiday.
Patriotism and the Meaning of July 4
Nearly two-thirds of Republicans (65%) said July 4 is a day to celebrate the United States of America, while only 24% of Democrats shared the same sentiment. Democrats and independents were more likely to describe July 4 as ‘just like any other day,’ with 11 percentage points higher than Republicans on that measure.
The survey also found that Republicans were more likely to participate in traditional patriotic activities, such as wearing red, white, and blue (52% compared to 20% of Democrats), attending a fireworks show (46% vs. 28%), and attending a parade or festival (20% vs. 9%).
A significant difference was also found in how Americans view the United States, with only 11% of Democrats believing the United States is the greatest country in the world, compared to 62% of Republicans.
