Paseo Arts Festival Honors Memorial Day Sacrifices

The Paseo Arts Festival in Oklahoma City, held annually on Memorial Day weekend, is a vibrant celebration of art, music, and food. However, amidst the festivities, a solemn message resonates: ‘Thank you for your service.’ This sentiment underscores the festival’s commitment to honoring the sacrifices made by military personnel.

Artistic Tribute to Service

Eric Mort, an Army veteran and artist, is one of the many who ensure the holiday’s significance is not overshadowed. Mort’s unique glass art, which he describes as ‘out of this world,’ serves as a meditation piece for many veterans. ‘I use glass that has opals and studded pieces down inside, so when you rotate them around, you can see the entire universe,’ Mort explains. His works are not only sold to veterans but also donated to cancer patients, reflecting a broader commitment to healing and remembrance.

For Mort, Memorial Day holds personal significance. Coming from a military family and celebrating his wedding anniversary during the festival weekend, he emphasizes the importance of remembering the sacrifices behind the holiday. ‘Somebody made a big sacrifice out there for you. Enjoy your weekend and everything but just don’t lose touch or forget what it’s all about,’ he advises.

Festival’s Commitment to Remembrance

The festival’s organizers echo Mort’s sentiments. Amanda Bleakley, executive director of the Paseo Arts Association, stresses the importance of recognizing the contributions that keep the nation safe. ‘We don’t want this weekend to go by without recognizing the significance of their participation,’ Bleakley states.

The Paseo Arts Festival not only showcases artistic talent but also serves as a reminder of the values and sacrifices that underpin American freedom. As attendees enjoy the cultural offerings, the festival ensures that the true meaning of Memorial Day remains at the forefront.
